A short list of tools that actually read a caption track, plus what each one is for. Checked August 2026.
Reviewed 17 August 2026. We make YouTubeScribe.
If you want a caption file and nothing else, start with a dedicated extractor. If you want notes or meeting memory, pick a notes product and treat YouTube as an import. Do not pick a tool that asks for your Google account only to show a public track.
| Point | YouTubeScribe | The other option |
|---|---|---|
| YouTubeScribe | No-account extractor, SRT free, 112 YouTube tools | Best when the URL is the whole job |
| YouTube's own transcript panel | Always free, always on the watch page | Slow to copy, no SRT, easy to lose the timestamps |
| Tactiq | Meeting-first workspace with a YouTube import | Best when the same team already notes Zoom and Meet there |
| NoteGPT | Summaries and study artefacts | Best when you will not read the full hour |
| youtube-transcript.io and similar one-box sites | Paste, wait, copy | Fine for a one-off. Thin on formats, history, and honesty when a track is missing. |
A tool had to accept a public YouTube URL and return text. Browser extensions that only work while you are signed into YouTube Studio were left out. So were speech-recognition APIs that charge by the minute and never read the caption endpoint.
We also left out sites that wrap the same public track and then ask you to connect Google before they show it. That login is not required to read a public caption file.
Can you leave with an SRT. Does the tool say so when there is no track. Does it keep auto-caption artefacts or clean them. Can you run a Shorts URL and a youtu.be URL without a special mode.
If you also need tags, thumbnails, or comments, a one-box transcript site will send you somewhere else. That is why YouTubeScribe keeps those tools next to the extractor.
YouTubeScribe is our product. It is in the list because it meets the same bar we applied to the others: public URL, timed text, a clear miss when YouTube has no track. Check each vendor's site before you pay. This page was last reviewed on 17 August 2026.
For one glance, yes. For a file you can edit, search, or load in a player, you want an export.
They share one method. Listing twenty of them does not help you choose. The rows above cover the jobs people actually have.
